A Walk Through Paris in the Snow

a walk through paris in the snow

I’m from Texas, so anytime there’s a chance for snow in the forecast anywhere I get excited. Snow in Paris is rare, but when it does happen it’s completely magical. Last Saturday the stars aligned and I got a chance to take a brief but wonderful walk through Paris in the snow.

The weather in Paris changes quickly so I don’t often spend too much time looking at the forecast, however I liked the odds when it said 100% snow on Saturday. That morning I felt like a child again waking up and running to the window to see if it was snowing. It wasn’t, but eventually around 10:30 it started to come down. Because it wasn’t cold enough for the snow to stick I knew the moment would be fleeting and rushed to get outside and take a walk through Paris in the snow.

What to Wear When it Snows in Paris

I’m no expert when it comes to snow gear. Like I said, I’m from Texas where snow is rare. But I do feel qualified to give advice on what to wear, because chances are you probably won’t pack for snow in Paris.

My best tips for what to wear when it snows in Paris are:

  • Wear waterproof shoes. You’ll be so much happier if your feet aren’t wet and cold. I wore waterproof boots that grip well which came in handy when the sidewalks started to get slippery.
  • Gloves or mittens are a must – your hands will thank you.
  • Bring an umbrella, especially if you want to take photos. I didn’t bring one and snowflakes kept hitting and melting on my lens.
  • This goes without saying but…wear the warmest jacket you have with plenty of layers! Unless the snow is sticking around you’ll want to make the most of your walk through Paris in the snow before it stops.

A Walk Through Paris in the Snow

We walked around the Jardin des Tuileries, to Place Vendôme (where the Christmas decorations are still up – so magical), along Rue de La Paix, past Palais Garnier, to Galeries Lafayette to try to go to the rooftop (it was closed), and back through the Carrousel du Louvre. It was a good walk and we were very ready to defrost afterwards. Hopefully next time there’s snow in Paris the restaurants and cafés will be open again so it’s easier to take a break and warm back up.
