Five Friday Finds from France: August 7th

Five Friday Finds from France Musée Rodin Summer Nocturne

It’s a very steamy day in Paris today and looks like it will be through mid-week next week. I’ve been lucky enough to dodge all 100+ degree days so far, so I guess it’s time to experience a taste of the canicule. Some of my favorite finds from this week came from the Jullouville marché in Normandy, but I must say the crown jewel this week was the summer nocturne in the Musée Rodin garden.

Handmade Wicker Baskets at the Jullouville Marché

I’m a bit basket-obsessed at the moment, so when I saw the man weaving wicker baskets at the Jullouville market I knew I wouldn’t be walking away empty-handed. He had baskets of all shapes and sizes perfect for market shopping or picnics, dog beds, carrying logs and more. Of course I wanted it all, but I settled on a bottle basket carrier to give to my family for the lake…if I don’t keep it for myself.

Musée Rodin Summer Nocturne

When I saw my friend Emily’s post about the Musée Rodin summer nocturne in the garden I was dying to go. The garden is exceptionally open late on four evenings this summer. It’s just about the most gorgeous picnic setting I’ve ever seen, and as a bonus it’s in the shade starting around 6:30 PM. Next Thursday August 13th is the final nocturne, so if you’re interested in going be sure to check it out! Tickets are 6€ and you can picnic from 5:45 until close at 9:30 PM.

A Summer Clafoutis

I’ve wanted to try the clafoutis dessert for a while but I don’t bake often because I mostly prefer savory to sweet. Last weekend we had lunch at a friend’s house in Brittany and I got to try clafoutis with cherries from their garden. I really liked it because it wasn’t too sweet and was a great light summer dessert. I would definitely attempt it at home (after purchasing a cherry pitter).

The Flâneur

Edmund White's The Flâneur

Since I’m spending most of August in Paris, I want to use the opportunity to continue to discover parts of the city that I haven’t seen yet. I came across Edmund White’s The Flâneur and thought it would be a great place to start. The book is filled with little-known gems all over the city from bookshops to museums, but what really sold me was the promise of where to get Tex-Mex surrounded by a dance rehearsal hall. I’m looking forward to reading and discovering White’s Paris.

Normandy Butter and Cream

As the markets were closed during the confinement period I’d yet to experience the magic that is Normandy butter and cream from the market. That all changed this week at the Jullouville marché. I don’t think I’ll ever want to buy butter or cream any other way now. The cream came straight from the farm without any GMOs or preservatives and the churned butter was cut straight from a huge block. Both the butter and cream made a huge difference in cooking.
